We find ourselves in a very unusual situation, where the previous manager was sacked despite being reasonably successful on the pitch. The sacking obviously had nothing to do with footballing achievements, more that his style of management simply didn't fit with the club's in respect of things like attitude towards the academy, community projects, integrating with the supporters, player ins and outs and team rotation etc. From King's perspective, he would probably argue that he was there to focus entirely on the first team, he could also argue that he was doing pretty well and had no desire or reason to get involved with the "touchy feely" stuff. I guess he regarded his as the more professional approach and whether we agree or not, there's no doubt he seemed to have unlimited access to a constant stream of talented players. Of course, the alternative view to this is that he was aloof, dismissive of the club's community ethos and just generally seemed to upset so many people.

Personally, I wasn’t entirely sure how I felt about the decision. It did surprise me, but when you see just how many people he seemed to be at odds with, (people who perform important functions within the club, most on a voluntary basis), I can at least understand why it happened. Many people suspect there was some sort of major bust-up that led to the decision, but I am absolutely convinced that it was just a case of different values and a gradual wearing down of many individuals such that after 3 years, the club just decided enough was enough. Regardless of whose fault it was, our club had become divided.

Anyway, whatever our personal views on the situation, we are where we are. Somebody had to take over and Dowse seems a good and popular choice, even amongst those who didn't fully agree with King's dismissal. He (Dowse) has a proven track record of success at this level and deserves to be given a chance. He certainly gets my backing.

It is true that Dowse has come here with the polar opposite approach to Steve King. Their philosophies couldn’t be any further apart. He’s obviously been talking to board members and supporters committee members etc and has really taken on board the community club ethos. That is a wonderful thing and is a huge part of what our club stands for. Nevertheless, the club would do well to remember that for 1100-1200 regulars on the terraces, that stuff is very much secondary to winning football matches. There are more than a few out there who neither approved of nor understood the King sacking and I’m sensing that the massive swing from one philosophy to the other is being interpreted by some of them, as promoting the social side of the club at the expense of the football. That is not my personal view, but it is a view being expressed by a small but significant minority on this forum and other social media.

To anyone in the group that feels the football side is being neglected I would say this. The season is about to commence and all I would ask is that you put all that stuff to one side and give Dowse and his team the chance to prove otherwise. At least, hold back from passing judgement until we're 10 or so games into the season. If you truly support the club, you surely must understand that nothing good can come of attacking the new regime before a competitive ball has even been kicked. Let’s give Dowse and the lads our full and committed support and give them every chance to show us what they can do before passing judgement. Surely that’s not too much to ask.

Well said Spike. Dowse operates in a completely different way to King and whether fans like it or not they need to give Dowse a chance and not make any judgements until at least 10 games in.

Thank you Spike, that's probably the most sensible and balanced post I've seen since the managerial change, and one that should speak for the majority of true Darts supporters.

So, on with the 2022/23 season. Train booked and all set for my 62nd year of support, with eternal optimism.

Very well written Spike.

I'm certainly looking forward to this new season, and this match at Bath is going to be a tricky one to call, but I think we will do well to get a point.

However, I do believe it may require a few games to get into a rhythm and not expecting the storming start we had last season. Very happy with the squad we have and looking forward to see how some of the development squad fare this season, especially Sam and Marvin, and the return of Cameron Brodie. Sam seems a young strong player who hasn't seemed out of his depth in highlights I have seen. Last season's development squad had some excellent writeups in the NLP, so will love it if they make the grade. After all, if you are good enough you are young enough It seems a long time ago now since we had a young Tom Bonner first join us back in 2010 for the first time.

Hopefully though, with no midweek game and the chance to put the finishing touches together in training sessions this week, we can come out and give a good account of ourselves at Bath. To those travelling, enjoy the game.

Agree, well said Spike. I count myself as one of those that was shocked by King's dismissal and my first reaction was whether to renew my season ticket. Idle threat but I did renew before Dowse was appointed. I do like the look of the squad and especially the inclusion of the Academy graduates. Looking forward to a tough season but well aware that we may be approaching the end of September/early October before we see a settled side - any earlier would be a bonus.

Masterful words Spike and I do think you have to give Dowse 10 games to get truly settled in. I'm hoping for more teamwork and fewer 'Christmas Tree players' trying to show off with zero plan B when the play breaks down.

I would take a point at Bath tbh but who knows, good luck to those travelling and COYD !!

We’re all tucked up in bed for that early start. Hoping to avoid any holiday traffic nightmare down the West Country!

I have to agree with everything Spike has said there and applaud you sir for putting those views forward.

I would agree that a point today at Bath would be a good result but Dowse will no doubt be going there for the 3 points.

Let’s get behind the manager and the team and support them in the Dartford way.

Not attending today, will be there next week. But excited for the season to get underway.

Will be interesting to see what the team is like, especially attacking I'm not sure if Wall/Sheringham are both fit enough, cant see them starting but we will soon find out. I do expect Rodari and Roberts to start

Will take a point but hopefully we can take all 3.

An interesting lineup, 7 SK regulars from last season but the lack of a recognised forward does concern me. The bench looks relatively strong too.

Can anyone confirm whether Brodie and Herschel are injured please. COYD

Does anyone know where to find the Twitter feed on the official club website now? I've looked everywhere for it - including where it used to be - but can't find it anywhere.

It's in the home match threads on this forum. I'll put it into away ones as well.
Also on "thedarts.eu" at the top right.
