A short piece on U Tube caught my eye the other night about Maidstone FC. Mostly it was a myopic film about how wonderful Jim Thompson actually was and how unlucky as a club they were. Ignoring this fairy tale completely but one segment intrigued me with something I never new until now. It would appear right at the death and Jim Thompson had resigned a new Chairman took over and his solution to Maidstone's woes was to relocate the club to St James's Park in Newcastle . The league refused and told them they could not move out of Kent. I had never heard about this bizarre twist before. Was it common knowledge?

I remember this story at the time , It was out of desperation after the collapse of MFC in 1991-92 Season.

The entire squad of players was put up for sale to raise cash in an attempt to save the club. During the 1991–92 season, the club was put up for sale. With huge debts, no ground and a poor team, there was little interest, although a consortium from the north east wanted to buy the club, move it to Tyneside and merge it with Newcastle Blue Star F.C..

What a shame they didn't...

Moving to another county? Didn't stop the FA allowing Wimbledon to Milton Keynes!!!

I remember the story; I think the suggested name for the the relocated club was Newcastle Browns FC.

I remember this well. Maidstoon would have been a great name!

It was always a senseless non starter of a suggestion and would have probably been too late to save the Darts.
What with an earlier post concerning the Metropolitan League and seeing Crawley Town in the lower reaches of that league at one time, and seeing them now progress into the Football League, it did cross my mind just where might the Darts have progressed to had we not been hindered by a lost decade having to start afresh back in the Kent League.
Please don't ever ask me to repeat my thoughts of JT!
