I know that isn't the right thing to be , but I am going back 80 years. I was on City's site to read about their match against Billericay last night.
Had a bit of a scout around and came across an interesting story about their match away to Cheltenham on 1st September 1939. Most scheduled trains from London were cancelled that day and diverted to the evacuation of children from the Capital due to the probable outbreak of war. So 17 players and officials set off west in 4 cars for a 7 hour journey to play the match. The game was played and another 7 hour trip home followed.
Chelmsford lost 7 - 1, not one of their better days. Naturally, of no consequence after what followed in the world, but it most likely didn't seem like that to those involved in the semi-epic trip at the time..
