An area of Billericay's pitch was deemed unsafe to play on, goodness knows how the downhill left wing of Watling Street pre mid eighties would have been described. Could have had bog snorkelling competitions on that, but somehow matches were played on it. Conditions had to be drastic to call off games in the 'good old days', though I cannot recall anyone getting seriously injured, getting trapped in the mud was more of a risk. If Les Burns fell on anyone they risked disappearing for good, perhaps there are still bodies under the gardens of Burman Close waiting to be unearthed. Some poor Wisbech Town wingman who didn't make it back to the Fens maybe?
