Welling (H) 01/01/20 - 3pm

Post by Park Life »

Well i thought i'd start another match thread as the last one went very well.
Another local derby this time against Bus Stop FC and would really like to get another victory over them as judging by their supporters comments we are not much better than them but try a bit harder. Hope we can put in a similar performance to the Tonbridge game then we can all see if it's just a bit of effort that is the difference.

It's hard not to chuckle when reading the Bus Stop forum at the moment, especially when that's the only reason you went there in the first place :D. They are clearly not happy and to be fair I don't blame them.

Interesting that they see our two teams as being equally matched, the only difference being that they perceive their own club as less motivated. Whilst that perception may well be justified, I think the two clubs are a world apart at the moment and are heading in entirely different directions. You only need to gauge the diametrically opposed mood on the respective fans forums to see which is up and which is down.

They will no doubt be out for revenge after the 0-3 reverse at the Bus Depot so we need to be on our game, but in my view we already have a much better team than they do and the future looks very bright at Princes Park. We are getting better every week and have every reason to be optimistic, so much so that even if the visitors did pull off a shock result on Wednesday, most Darts fans would see it as nothing more than a blip.

Welling have some decent fans and they are the ones who I sympathise with. Thank God that Dartford have a policy that restricts anyone from having enough shares to launch a take over. We have enough crosses and garlic at the front door to ward off the Goldbergs of this world.
Welling United is an absolute joke at the moment, to the point that some of their supporters are boycotting the New Year's Day fixture through fear of total humiliation.
We will still have to be on our game though as their players will be desperately trying to put on a shop window display to get a move the hell out of there.

Having dug a bit deeper I must admit that I'm starting to feel a bit sorry for the Welling fans. I've got no sympathy for clubs that spend themselves into trouble and I never throw money in buckets for clubs who have been competing against us with players we ourselves might have been able to sign had they not been enticed by money that these clubs couldn't afford in the first place. However, there appears to be something else going on at Welling, it reminds me of when we became entwined with Maidstone Utd and Jim Thompson. Thompson was spouting all sorts of pie in the sky nonsense about leading us to the promised land of a new ground whilst at the same time the budgets were being slashed and the team being systematically dismantled. Before we knew it, the bulldozers were all over our Watling Street ground, Thompson and our own board of directors scarpered and new houses were up before we supporters had time to mount a legal challenge. Getting back to where we are now was a miracle for which I will always be grateful to the people who made it happen.

Whether Goldberg has similar plans for Welling remains to be seen, but the recent setting up of the new Welling Utd FC company is being seen as suspicious and is clearly worrying Wings fans. Let's be honest, we all enjoy the rivalry with local clubs and maybe have a sly snigger when they lose, but I for one, certainly don't want to see them gone. Local derbies are the most fun of all games and the bigger gates etc are beneficial to us all. Of course I'd still like to stuff Welling tomorrow but I genuinely hope they survive and continue to be a less successful club than ourselves for many years to come.

I think welling do well with their small attendances and I genuinely mean that.
I hope they have a well sustained future and continue to be our close rival.
I also hope we stuff them 5-0 and we all laugh at them on the pitch.
