Perfect penalties seal shoot-out triumph!

Faultless Dartford claimed the Kent Merit Under-16 Girls Cup after scoring five perfect penalties in their shoot-out against Aylesford. There was little to choose between the two sides after 1-1 draw in normal time but it was the Darts who came out on top in the end. But this was an entertaining match, very evenly contested and the penalty shoot-out was the thing that finally broke Aylesford’s hearts. What a match! Then, after an intense 80-minute battle – what a shoot-out!

Aylesford though, had got off to a dream start when they got their noses in front as early as the 5th minute through Sophie O’Neill but Dartford were not to be outdone today and Isabelle Edgar equalised with a great effort fifteen minutes later.

The match became a great midfield battle between the top two teams in the Kent Girls & Ladies League with Aylesford, favourites to lift the cup. They came to the final with an impressive league form of 9 wins out of 10 this season. Mind you, the Darts had held Aylesford to a 2-2 draw at Princes Park just a few weeks earlier, the only team to make a dent in Aylesford’s otherwise 100% record.

Everyone in the Dartford team and on the Darts’ bench played their part in this win today and Kent FA emphasised the point when they wrote this of the final – “Huge respect to both teams for an incredible game— a showcase of young talent!” Everyone would certainly agree with that statement.

At the end of the scheduled 80 minutes, Dartford’s five penalties were exemplary and Aylesford’s day ended cruelly for them, having fallen short at the final hurdle.

Manager George Kingdon said: “It was a really good representation of girls’ football at under-16 level.
“Both teams are a credit to their clubs and played some nice football. It was a physical game and both sets of players managed it well, as did the four officials, I was impressed with them.”

The following day at the end of the training session the Dartford FC Women welcomed manager George Kingdon’s U16s to have a photo-shoot with their newly-won silverware on show.
