Match Report by Chris Palmer

https://www.dartfordfc.com/match-report ... artford-0/

An early first-half goal by Joel Rollinson proved to be enough for Weymouth, as Dartford’s miserable luck at the Bob Lucas Stadium continued.

As 1,087 supporters turned up for the Terras’ first home game of the season, the Darts had two new faces in the starting eleven. Goalkeeper Jack McIntyre, who has arrived on a month’s loan from Accrington Stanley replaced Mitchell Beeney, while Oxford United defender James Golding (also on a month’s loan) took his place in the heart of the Dartford defence.

And, it was the visitors’ defence which came under pressure from the start, as Weymouth began quickly out of the blocks. As the hosts raced into the Dartford box in numbers, Joash Nembhard was the man alert to the danger and back-tracked to put in a timely block on the line within the opening minute.

The Darts responded to the early pressure with an excellent attack of their own after eight minutes, which saw Tyrell Miller-Rodney’s strike blocked. Unfortunately, Brandon Barzey couldn’t keep his follow-up down, and Weymouth edge ahead three minutes later.

The goal seemingly came out of nothing… goalkeeper Jack McIntyre looked to have Joel Rollinson’s deep cross covered. However, as he jumped to catch the ball, he caught his upper body on the upright, and the ball somehow dropped into the back of the net (11)!

The goal spurred on the hosts, who forced loanee James Golding into making an excellent interception, which then resulted in Luke Allen coming close to equalising at the other end (13).

The midfielder came close to scoring again after a long period of Weymouth dominating the ball. But, he couldn’t find the target on this occasion (32), before teammate Tyrell Miller-Rodney found himself in the referee’s book six minutes later.

The visitors came alive during the final five minutes of the half, and were unlucky to not go in level at the break. Miller-Rodney forced an excellent save out of Gerard Benfield (40), before the goalkeeper stepped up to deny Luke Coulson with a fine save three minutes later.

There was very little in the way of goalmouth action during the opening exchanges of the second forty-five, if any, as both sides cancelled each other out.

Alan Dowson was the first of the two managers to react, as he made a double substitution on the hour. Charlie Sheringham and Lewis Manor coming on to replace Brandon Barzey and Tyrell Miller-Rodney. In fact, the latter swap took a little time after the Dartford number five was maliciously shoved into the advertising wall surrounding the pitch! Thankfully, the midfielder looked alright as he left the field.

Dartford’s final substitution saw Maxwell Statham replace Harvey Bradbury after 75 minutes. Meanwhile, the Weymouth substitutions included ex-Dart Norman Wabo coming on for Brandon Goodship (69), Scott Rees coming on for Josh McQuoid (90+2), and Joel Rollinson being replaced by Frankie Monk (90+7).

The longer the game continued, the less likely a second goal looked possible, especially with the blustery conditions getting worse. However, both sides had glorious opportunities to score during the closing ten minutes…

First to come close were the visitors, via Maxwell Statham. The substitute timed his move perfectly to get on the end of Sam Odaudu’s long throw, only to see his effort drift agonisingly wide of the Weymouth upright (80).

Five minutes later saw Jack McIntyre pull off a superb double save to keep his team in the game… but the Darts just weren’t able to capitalise.

The result sees Dartford return to Kent without securing a point in Dorset once again, but there’s many positives to take from the game. Next up is Hampton & Richmond Borough at Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park on Tuesday evening, where Luke Coulson and Co will be determined to register that first win of the season.

TEAMS

WEYMOUTH: Gerard Benfield, Calvin Brooks, Anthony Cheshire, Charlie Rowan, Leo Hamblin, Keelan O’Connell, Josh McQuoid, Tom Bearwish (c), Joel Rollinson, Dan Roberts, Brandon Goodship.

SUBSTITUTES: Scott Rees, Teddy Howe, Norman Wabo, David Sesay, Frankie Monk.

DARTFORD: Jack McIntyre, Tommy Block, James Golding, Joash Nembhard, Sam Odaudu, Jordan Wynter, Tyrell Miller-Rodney, Luke Allen, Brandon Barzey, Harvey Bradbury, Luke Coulson (c).

SUBSTITUTES: Maxwell Statham, Charlie Sheringham, Lewis Manor, Mitchell Beeney, Baris Altintop.

2 games in, throw away a 2 goal league and try and play hoof all today without success. That’s the facts but only 2 games, a period of gelling will be tolerated but on the first two games a long hard season ahead.
No possessions footy today and a poor goal to give away.
On the other hand it was a great day out with friends and the off field performance was much better than the on field one.
Hoping for. a better result next time.
Oh the joys of following Dartford.
Poor turnout too, have people given up already?

I take it there's no news on the signing Dowes has been after for months.
It can't be Golding if he's only here for 1 month.

Just find it ridiculous to be honest, people already asking for a managerial change. That's the last thing we need at this point.

I don’t go on twitter, I haven’t read twitter, calling for a managerial change is utter ridiculous but there will be criticism sometimes no matter how many games played Even now every game is crucial because that’s the level we’re trying to achieve

Mark, Fortunately major decision making at our club is never based on the views of a few anonymous non entities posting ill thought dirge on Twitter.

Understood most of that except the bits overdubbed by seagulls / bottles / wind

Today’s second half was terrible stuff. Statham had our only attempt which went over the bar. Weymouth were not much better. First half was a reasonable watch, I felt we were too heavy in midfield, providing plenty of crosses and through balls to no one. A fair few chances were created and we’d have scored at least one on our day, and it’s a real pity that the game should be decided on an unfortunate mistake by the new keeper, who had an otherwise decent game. On that note, Dowson needs to recognise and explain the mess we find ourselves in goalkeeper-wise, which has become an abject disaster which need never have happened (as far as I’m aware).

Not a terrible day out given the score line, coach / minibus without WC is ridiculous though.

True what is said re social media but also what Dicky Dart says.
If it's true what Mikey says about the toilets or lack of them then that's diabolical. All us old guys traveling with weak bladders is not a laughing matter.
Managerial doubts?? Gone are the days of standing at the back of the stand demonstrating, now people rely on twitter.
Heaven save us all.💥

Some of the comments made regularly on X (was Twitter) by those that choose to remain nameless, hiding behind a false name, clearly reflects their levels of intelligence (absolutely zero!)

Again, a tad disappointed at the result but Weymouth has never been an easy place to visit. I shouldn't think the lad at Weymouth is going to let them slip into the predicament they were in last season.
17th position in the league, never been so low. And all of two games played.
Early days and I'm sure Dowse will get us up the table soon. we knew losing Essam/Bonner would be a huge gap to fill but let's give the lads a chance to grow into the side before we start hanging them out to dry.
By the way, what has happened to Manny? Not a mention on here, from Dowse or any bugger. I sponsored the lad and haven't seen a Dickie bird.

Perhaps we need to go on 'twitter' to find out anything that's going on at the club. :D Has the club got a twitter account? cos there's bugger all on the website that is of any use or ornament.
Not that I'm on twitter :D

Last week we had 18 minutes added time to our match. Agreed, something needs to be done for time wasting , but reading the NLP this morning, set pieces, goal celebration? Really?
As said, even Premier players are questioning it. We are non league for goodness sake. Players will be exhausted.
By all means add time for time wasting but , come on. Some matches were still going well after 5pm some Saturdays. Admittedly, Ebbsfleet needed the extra time to win most matches last season.🤫

First half we did ok and on the balance of play and chances shouldn't have gone in at HT behind.
Second half was poor as we didn't create a signal effort on target.
I didn't feel either side played particularly well over the 90 minutes and it was a tough watch at times.

I always felt it was a mistake to go with four big centre forwards as it leaves us with no different options and as yesterday showed, when we aren't creating any chances just swapping one target man for another makes absolutely no difference.

I'm a little frustrated that after two games the goalkeeping and centre back positions haven't been sorted as Dowse signed players for those positions and has changed them after two games with loan players. A month down the line when their loans expire we will be in the same position again and that's not good enough. I accept we lost two great central defenders for personal reasons and they will be a tough act to follow but we've made a real pigs ear of the keepers position losing Wilks, who imo was arguably the best keeper in the division.

Time for Dowse and his team to sort it out but the position we find ourselves in at the moment is all of our own making and plugging the gaps with short term loan players is not the answer imo.

I think time should definitely be added on for goal celebrations otherwise if you score a late goal to go ahead you could just keep celebrating until the final whistle!

Can't add anything to Park Life's summary of events and I'm quite confident Dowse will sort out any squad dilemmas he feels we have. All in all a pretty forgettable day out apart from the fact Max Verstappen was driving the bus home 😳

Nothing much to add to the comments on the game but the bits I liked :
# The two centre backs played well and looked solid with the new guy Golding fitting in well and got my MOTM
# The young Keeper [McIntyre ] played well and controlled his box well , just made the one mistake and needs to improve on his [ long ball] kicking , he also had the " balls " to applaud the Darts fans at the end of the game , not just slink of after his mistake
# Lewis Manor came on as a sub and in his short time was a menace up front winning most of his headers but wasted as no Darts support near him , needs to start !!

Bits I wasnt too keen on :
# Moving Bradbury to right winger when Dowse decided to make subs , should have been Statham who is a natural in wide positions and would have got crosses in for the other 2 big strikers
# No shots on goal 2nd half with midfield creating nothing and then all resorting to long ball punts

Overall we played ok but just lacked threat on their goal but only lost 1-0 so the Grim Reaper hasnt called yet but we do need a win to restore confidence and hope to see it on tuesday night against Hampton & R

For the 1st time for 15 years I travelled on the Fans " Super Bus " and the entertainment on there will stay with me for a while yet !!!!!!
